The People’s Republic
of China is in eastern Asia on the western shore of the Pacific
Ocean. With an area of 9.6 million square kilometres, it is the
third largest country in the world after Canada and the USA.
China shares borders with Afghanistan, Bhutan, Burma, India,
Korea, Laos, Nepal, Pakistan, Sikkim, the former Soviet Union,
and Vietnam. Its coastline extends for some 18,000 kilometres
from Vietnam in the south to North Korea in the north. Over
5,000 islands are dotted throughout the adjacent seas, the
largest being Taiwan. As China’s latitudes span almost 50
degrees, its climate varies from tropical to frigid zones. China
has the world’s largest population, with around 1.35 billion
people (2010) – approximately 20% of the people on our planet.
The People’s Republic of China was first founded in 1949, but
China has over 5,000 years of history. It was one of the world’s
earliest civilizations and one of the countries where economic
activity was first developed. China holds a host of fabulous
treasures including The Great Wall, a UNESCO World Heritage, the
terracotta warriors and horses, which are one of the most
significant excavations of the 20th century to name but two.
Each year, China attracts millions of visitors from all over the
world and its charm and diversity never fails to fascinate.
